Virtual CD does not start / the virtual drives are gone

No Virtual CD program is starting anymore and the virtual drives are gone. There is no error message.

This problem can be caused by Sophos Anti-Virus 10.0 which deletes the file vcXXup.dll (XX corresponds to the Virtual CD version) out of the Virtual CD subdirectory System and moves it to the Sophos quarantine folder. This problem has been observed with Virtual CD v9, but may occur with any Virtual CD version. If this DLL is missing, Virtual CD cannot start any program anymore (besides the diagnostics tool) and the virtual CD drives are missing out of a sudden.

Solution: Exclude the DLL from the Sophos scan and restore the file from the quarantine folder.

Avira antivirus software may cause the same problem. In this case the antivirus software deletes entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit which are set BEFORE userinit.exe.

Workaround: The key will be accepted as follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\userinit.exe,C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Virtual CD v10\\System\\VC10Play.exe,"
