Is it possible to read a virtual CD with an older version of Virtual CD if it has been created with a newer version?
Usually you can use virtual CDs created with Virtual CD v5 or higher on Virtual CD v4, since both use the same file format - VC4. An exception to the rule are CDs in which geometry data has been read out. With Virtual CD v4 you can insert these, but not run them, since Virtual CD v4 does not recognize the geometry data.
Virtual CD v6 uses as well a new format "vc6", that is only used when a new special read out method is required. Usually, in most cases, Virtual CD v6 and future versions use the format and the extension vc4. VC6 files can not be used by Virtual CD v5 or older versions.
This also pertains to Virtual CD v8 with the new format "vc8" and Virtual CD v9 with "vc9".
Conversely virtual CDs created with virtual CD v4 can be used by all later versions. Virtual CDs with the extension FCD (Virtual CD v3 and older) can be also used, with Virtual CD v6 (and later) even directly without conversion.
