Error 4000 in iTunes

This is really odd because I had it working at one point, but don't know what's changed to cause this problem. Basically, I purchased some music, iTunes created the play list, I selected the play list and told it to burn a CD. I right clicked on Virtual CD icon in the task bar and on my virtual CDR I told it to create a 700MB disc and insert it. iTunes sees it and then it says "checking playlist" and then it as soon as that is done, it briefly says it's starting to burn the cd when it immediately switches to canceling cd burn and then shows a dialog with the following: The attempt to burn the disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4000). I've ensured I have 8.0.0.7 or vdrv8000.sys and I've tried different combinations of settings to no avail. I've also just tried to burn non protected files with the same result. Anybody know what's going on? Nero Burning Rom 7.0.8.2 burns to the virtual drive okay (tested audio burn with MP3s) Burning to my physical Sony DVD is working okay. As I said, I did have this working at one point, but that was about a week or two ago and I have no idea what has changed.

Some ideas
Looking at Google it seems two that there are at least two possible ways to solve this problem:

Error 4000 in iTunes
I have looked at Google as well, to no avail. I have also done the Repair option as well as lowering the speed. What actually happens is that iTunes will say "initializing burn", wait a sec, then start to burn the first song, then immediately go to the canceled burn message and then show the error dialog. My next step is to de-authorize iTunes, uninstall and re-install the program to see what happens.

Error 4000 in iTunes
Still no luck. deauthorize / Uninstall does not work. I put Virutal CD on another computer with iTunes and it worked fine.... Anyone interested in looking at my task list to see if they can spot anything that might conflict? (I use SysInternals task manager so it shows all sub-processes)

Diagnostics
The Virtual CD diagnostics output (Toolbox -> Show diagnostics) may give us an idea which 3rd party component may cause this error. Simply paste the complete output into a new answer - it will be kept internal!
Hartmut Mäcker (H+H) | 10.08.06
Your diagnostics
There are two "suspicious" filter drivers in your system which are known to cause problems: c:\windows\system32\drivers\gearaspiwdm.sys - CDRom Class Filter Driver - GEAR Software Inc. - 2.0.6.0 and c:\windows\system32\drivers\pxhelp20.sys - Px Engine Device Driver for Windows 2000/XP - Sonic Solutions - 2.3.32.0 You can try to rename the one or the other, reboot and retry. Any report back is highly appreciated!

Drives now gone and can't set a new one
I already saw the pxhelp20 one and thought that suspicious, so I disabled it. When I disabled the gearaspiwdm.sys, my drives vanished (even physical one) and I can't create virtual ones. I'm guessing it has something to do with the two registry entries: Class upper filter: GEARAspiWDM Class lower filter: I'm not sure what the upper filter should be. Nero use to have a program called NeroCheck which would correct this, but it looks like they got rid of it with the last update. I'll google around and see if there's a good setting for this.
Ken | 10.08.06
Diagnostic follow up
Okay, the gearaspiwdm.sys file is needed by iTunes as it is the burning software it uses. pxhelp20.sys has been removed and not needed so far. After uninstalling iTunes, running the "guided tour" at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B314060&FR=1 to restore the filters and rebooting about 5000 times

Problem solved by another customer
A German customer encountered the same problem and "solved" it as follows: After the installation of Virtual CD he rebooted and just to be sure he then installed the driver of the Virtual CD SCSI Controller again. I cannot imagine why this should have worked, but you never know. I think it may be worth a try. OK, GEARAspiWDM.sys is the burning engine for iTunes and thus absolutely necessary. Maybe the installation of the newest drivers from GEAR Software will solve the problem. I'm still quite sure that the driver is the problem as we encountered so many problems with this driver before. Just have a look for GEARAspiWDM in our knowledge base and you'll see what I mean... BTW: Funny enough the error 4000 is really unknown, i.e. there is nothing in the Apple knowledge base... :-(

where is this driver?
I just got this problem, too, after installing Virtual CD on my new laptop. Exactly the same error; would really be nice to know what's causing it. If you want more data, though, let me know what would be helpful and I can get it to you. I can tell you what *doesn't* fix it, though: reinstalling doesn't. Reinstalling (or repairing) Virtual CD doesn't. Reinstalling (or repairing) iTunes doesn't. Installing the linked drivers from GEAR Software doesn't. Sending the files I want to burn over to my old laptop, burning them with iTunes there, then grabbing the virtual cd and mounting it on my new laptop, that works, but it's way more hassle than it's worth. So... the virtual cd scsi controller drivers you mentioned the reinstalling of having fixed the issue for someone else, cause I'll try anything, at this point... where might I find them?
Adam | 18.08.06
Driver
Hi Ken, hi Adam,
the German customer stated that the driver from the KB article below does not cause the iTunes error 4000.
I'm still not covinced that this error 4000 is really related to the Virtual CD driver, but of course it will be worth a try.
Unfortunately this error 4000 simply means that it is an unknown error, i.e. there may be many different causes and errors... :-(
The developer who is responsible for the driver is in vacation now, but I forwarded him this issue. Please let me know if the driver from the KB article solves the problem.
Many thanks in advance!

Works for me
Hi, Folks. I just found this software and had the same problem as the folks below. I rebooted and tried again. Success! Cheers, Max

PAE test
Please check whether your PC is PAE enabled. You can see this in the Virtual CD Diagnostics (Toolbox -> Show Diagnostics). If you don't have more than 4 GB RAM, please create a new DWORD entry VCDFlags = 0x200 in the registry (Start -> Run -> regedit) under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vdrv8000.ini and try again. Please make sure that you have Virtual CD 8.0.0.4 with the original driver. Any report back is highly appreciated!

Turning Off Explorer Extension Worked For Me.
I had this same issue. Rebooting, replacing drivers, etc. gave no results. I finally cured it by unchecking all options in the "Explorer Integration" settings. Have been able to burn both MP3's and audio books to virtual cd without problem ever since. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

Error 4000 in iTunes
Hello Dan, Thank you for your information. Does it work only if uncheck ALL options in the "Explorer Integration" settings? Best regards

Explorer Extension Follow Up
Unchecking "Enable the Virtual CD Explorer extension" allows iTunes to burn. Checking that box results in error 4000. Checking/unchecking any other boxes on that settings panel doesn't seem to have any affect. I also installed the demo on my laptop. On the laptop I can burn from iTunes even with the explorer extension enabled. Both are running the same version of Windows. Perhaps it's a driver conflict? Hope that helps. (By the way, GREAT package. Just what my company needed. My payment for a 5 client license is on the way. Burning out of iTunes is just icing on the cake!) Dan.

David, does this error refer to Virtual CD or do you have a general problem regarding error 4000? If this is a general problem please refer to the iTunes support. Thank you.

Problem Solved...
Ken, I had the same problem, and found the following information, and was able to fix it. I know this sounds scary, but I did it and it worked... Read carefully and follow step by step. Itunes disc burning problems Unknown error(4000) is associated with the windows XP version of Itunes. This is a windows problem not a Itunes problem. The problem that your having is this one; Your ide drivers are not correct. For example you installed windows XP and then your driver disc. Your drivers disc for your motherboard contained a nvidia ide driver so you installed it. Now you can't burn anything either from Nero or Itunes. This is how you correct your problem. Go to the control panel then into system then into hardware then into device manager. When your list of devices show up into the window goto the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller. Open this by hitting the plus sign. If it gives you anything but, Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel, and possibly Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller, then uninstall it by doing a right mouse click on the driver under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller. Then restart windows and let windows put its own drivers in place. You should then have in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller this: Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel, and possibly Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. Then try Itunes or any other burning software and you should be good to go. -Ninevolt

easy solution to error 4000 and 4450
All you have to do is go to the control panel, click add/remove programs, find your itunes and click change, then click repair. That's it. You don't even need to close it out and you won't lose your music. It resets itunes as the default recording/burning program. have fun

changing burning speed
All I did was change the speed setting to 8x on both itunes and by right clicking on the d drive in My Computer and it works fine now. I'd suggest trying it.

Enable the Virtual CD Explorer extension
Explorer Extension Follow Up Unchecking "Enable the Virtual CD Explorer extension" allows iTunes to burn. Checking that box results in error 4000. Checking/unchecking any other boxes on that settings panel doesn't seem to have any affect Sorry I have the same problem (unknown error 4000); however, I am not sure how to "enable the virtual cd explorer extension." Can anyone help??

Unabling Enable the Virtual CD Explorer extension
Well, I can't see any releation between the Virtual CD Explorer Extension and the error 4000 in iTunes. However you can disable this in the Virtual CD Settings -> Explorer Integration.

tried everything, and finally a suggestion fixed it.
I tried new discs, slower burn speeds, reinstalling itunes, repairing itunes, downloading updates for burners, reinstalling hardware, etc.etc.etc. Finally, somebody said to go to system under hardware and device manager, under IDE Atapi controller i should see primary, secondary and standard.....if not delete what is there , restart system and let windows correct it , which it did and everything worked perfect on itunes and other burning options from then on.

Error 4000 in iTunes
I also had the same problem. But BE CAREFUL using Ninevolt's solution of uninstalling everything but Primary and Secondary IDE Channel. I saw "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller" in the list and uninstalled that. The result was that my computer would not finish booting! Finally, after leaving the computer to boot for several hours it reinstalled the "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller" plus "Primary BM Ultra DMA Channel" and "Secondary BM Ultra DMA Channel" (along with "Primary IDE Channel" and "Secondary IDE Channel"), and I still had the same problem with Error 4000. All except the "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller" and the "Primary BM Ultra DMA Channel" were showing conflicts with the IRQ (yellow explanation mark). I finally got brave and uninstalled the "Secondary BM Ultra DMA Channel" but kept the "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller" and that worked! It also solved a problem with Nero V8.1.1.3 giving me a "Buffer too large" error (which halted the operation) when I tried to burn DVDs. BTW, the version of the VIA Primary and Secondary BM drivers was 5.1.2600.2180 dated 7/1/2000. I did not try looking for a newer VIA driver, but just decided to leave well enough alone. The bottom line is: don't take Ninevolt's suggestion too literally if you have a VIA chipset on your motherboard (mine is an Abit AV8). It seems that the VIA Bus Master IDE Controller is still needed. Hope this helps someone else. The Fiddler

I had the same problem. starts to burn then cuts out message error 4000. I have finally come up with the solution. Get rid of itunes its crap. Go to amazon, Buy all your music from them. most of the time its cheaper anyway. Make sure you have windows media player. It downloads to media player and you can use media players own burner. I have tried it and it works perfect.
