Install the Virtual CD program on each workstation (e.g. using the central client setup, see articles for Version 4, for Version 5 and for Version 6 and higher); this program is then used to access virtual CDs that are stored on the network. Use the NTFS security functions to grant user permissions to the various virtual CDs.
With this technique, the virtual CDs stored on the network run in the virtual drives which have been set up on the individual workstations. Before a client can access the virtual CDs in question, however, the virtual CDs must be added in the CD Management on the workstation either to the local or global view (menu path in the CD Management program: View -> Virtual CD Settings -> Network -> global configuration path).
Only virtual CDs added to the Global View will be displayed on all workstations automatically. Therefore please make sure that these use the same global configuration path. To specify this path, run the Virtual CD Settings and open the Configuration page. Enter or select the path under Global configuration (Virtual CD v10) respectively under Folder for global configuration on the Network page of the Settings (Virtual CD v9 and older). Please use a UNC path name.
We additionally recommend the usage of Virtual CD NMS as central management tool for Virtual CD!
It is possible to set up virtual drives only on a network server rather than on the individual workstations, for example, assign each virtual CD permanently to a specific virtual drive, and then share the virtual drives. If you use this method, however, you loose one of the main features of Virtual CD, because the virtual CDs are shown in network drives rather than virtual drives. If you want to use Virtual CD on this way, you need Virtual CD FS for file servers.
Note: As of Virtual CD v6 the number of simultaneous accesses to shared virtual drives of the client version is restricted to 1. If you want to share virtual drives for more than one access at a time, you need Virtual CD FS!
